U.S. Manufacturing Ends 2025 on a Weak Note
American factories saw a decline in activity during December, closing out a challenging year marked by ongoing tariff issues. The ISM Manufacturing PMI dropped by 0.3 points to 47.9, reaching its lowest reading since October 2024. Production also edged down by 0.4 points to 51.0, and new orders have remained below the 50 threshold for four consecutive months, signaling persistent weakness in demand.
The employment index continued to signal contraction for the eleventh month in a row, reflecting ongoing job losses in the sector. Meanwhile, the prices paid index stayed high at 58.5, indicating that cost pressures remain a concern for manufacturers. Overall, many survey participants described the past year as disappointing for the industry.
