A break for couches and pasta: Trump relaxes and postpones tariffs
Trump Postpones Tariff Hikes on Furniture and Pasta Imports
President Donald Trump has provided relief to the furniture and pasta industries by either delaying or reducing significant tariff increases that were set to begin on January 1, 2026. The administration has decided to extend the current tariffs on select imported home furnishings for another year, maintaining the existing rates while continuing discussions with international trade partners.
On Wednesday, Trump signed an official proclamation that pushes back the planned tariff hikes—which were initially scheduled to start on Thursday—until January 1, 2027. This move keeps the 25% tariff on certain upholstered wooden furniture in place for now, giving more time for negotiations and industry adjustment.
