About Ripple USD (RLUSD)

What Is Ripple USD (RLUSD)?

Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a United States dollar–pegged stablecoin created by Ripple, the company best known for developing the XRP Ledger and the digital asset XRP. Launched in December 2024, each RLUSD token maintains a fixed value of one U.S. dollar, backed by an equivalent amount of cash or cash-equivalent reserves such as short-term U.S. Treasuries. This structure aims to provide stability for transactions, trading, and payments, reducing the volatility common in many cryptocurrencies.

The stablecoin is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC (SCTC), a Ripple subsidiary regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This regulatory oversight includes strict compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) standards, placing RLUSD in the category of regulated digital assets. Ripple launched RLUSD in late 2024 as part of its effort to expand its role in cross-border payments and digital finance.

Available on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and the Ethereum blockchain, RLUSD offers interoperability between two widely used blockchain ecosystems. On XRPL, RLUSD benefits from fast settlement and low transaction fees, while on Ethereum it functions as an ERC-20 token, allowing integration with a broad range of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

How Ripple USD Works

RLUSD operates as a fiat-backed stablecoin with a 1:1 reserve model. For every RLUSD token issued, an equivalent value in U.S. dollars or approved low-risk assets is held in segregated reserves at U.S.-based financial institutions. Independent certified public accountants conduct monthly attestations to verify the accuracy of these reserves. Public reports provide transparency on circulating supply, reserves, and token issuance or redemption.

On the XRP Ledger, RLUSD is implemented as an issued currency, enabling rapid and inexpensive transactions suitable for cross-border payments, remittances, and institutional settlements. On Ethereum, RLUSD follows the ERC-20 token standard, making it compatible with decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and other smart contract–based services. This multi-chain approach gives users flexibility in choosing their preferred environment for storage, transfers, and integration.

RLUSD can be held in both custodial and non-custodial crypto wallets. Custodial wallets are managed by a third party, offering account recovery options and customer support but with less privacy. Non-custodial wallets give users full control over their private keys, increasing privacy and independence but requiring greater responsibility for security. The stablecoin is supported by a growing list of centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and on/off-ramp providers.

Is Ripple USD Safe?

Several factors contribute to RLUSD’s security and reliability. First, SCTC’s NYDFS charter requires compliance with established U.S. financial regulations, offering a legal framework for operations. Second, the backing reserves consist of cash and high-quality liquid assets held at reputable institutions, with regular third-party attestations providing public proof of coverage. This reduces the risk of under-collateralization.

In addition, RLUSD smart contracts on Ethereum undergo independent audits to ensure they meet industry security standards. Ripple also maintains certifications such as SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, along with an active Threat and Vulnerability Management program. Users, however, must still follow best practices for digital asset storage. The safety of RLUSD in practice depends not only on its reserve model and compliance measures but also on the wallet security and operational practices of the holder.

Conclusion

Ripple USD (RLUSD) combines the stability of a fiat-backed digital currency with the versatility of blockchain technology. Its dual presence on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum allows for both fast, low-cost settlements and broad DeFi integration. With regulated issuance, transparent reserve reporting, and multi-chain support, RLUSD is designed to serve individuals, businesses, and institutions seeking a reliable digital asset for payments, trading, and settlement. As with all cryptocurrencies, prospective users should evaluate both the benefits and the operational considerations before holding or transacting with RLUSD.

Ripple (XRP) and the XRP Ledger: A Detailed Project Analysis

Ripple, and its associated digital asset XRP, represent a significant force in the blockchain and cryptocurrency landscape, primarily aiming to revolutionize global payments. Founded in 2012 by Ripple Labs, the project seeks to enable fast, low-cost, and reliable international transactions, offering a modern alternative to traditional financial systems like SWIFT.

Core Technology: The XRP Ledger

At the heart of the Ripple ecosystem is the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a distributed, open-source, and permissionless blockchain. Unlike cryptocurrencies that rely on Proof-of-Work (like Bitcoin) or Proof-of-Stake, the XRPL utilizes a unique consensus mechanism known as the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA) or Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA).

This consensus model involves a network of trusted validator nodes, each maintaining a Unique Node List (UNL). For transactions to be validated and included in the ledger, a supermajority (at least 80%) of these trusted validators must agree. This process allows the XRPL to achieve transaction finality in 3-5 seconds, significantly faster than many other blockchain networks and traditional banking systems.

Key technical advantages of the XRP Ledger include:

  • Speed and Scalability: The XRPL can handle up to 1,500 transactions per second (TPS), with some sources suggesting up to 3,400 TPS, making it highly scalable for financial applications.
  • Low Transaction Fees: Transactions on the XRPL typically incur fees of less than one cent, drastically reducing costs compared to traditional cross-border payment methods.
  • Energy Efficiency: The RPCA consensus mechanism does not involve energy-intensive mining, making XRP significantly more environmentally friendly than Proof-of-Work cryptocurrencies.
  • Decentralization: While Ripple Labs is a significant contributor, the XRPL is a decentralized, public blockchain, with over 150 validators on the network, and any changes require approval from at least 80% of the network.

Key Use Cases and RippleNet

XRP's primary use case is to act as a bridge currency in cross-border payments and remittances. It facilitates near-instantaneous transfers between different fiat currencies, eliminating the need for pre-funded Nostro/Vostro accounts and reducing liquidity costs for financial institutions.

RippleNet is Ripple's blockchain-based payment network designed to connect banks, payment providers, and financial institutions globally. It offers various products, including xCurrent (for real-time gross settlements) and xRapid, now known as On-Demand Liquidity (ODL). ODL is the specific Ripple product that leverages XRP as a bridge currency for liquidity, facilitating real-time transfers without traditional intermediaries.

While many financial institutions like Santander, Standard Chartered, PNC Bank, and American Express have adopted RippleNet for faster and cheaper cross-border transactions, it's crucial to distinguish that not all RippleNet users utilize XRP directly. However, companies like Tranglo and SBI Remit are confirmed to be leveraging ODL, indicating direct XRP usage for international transfers.

Beyond cross-border payments, the XRP Ledger also supports digital asset exchange, smart contracts, decentralized applications (dApps), and micropayments.

The SEC Lawsuit and Regulatory Landscape

A significant factor impacting XRP has been the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs in December 2020. The SEC alleged that Ripple conducted an unregistered securities offering by selling XRP. Ripple, conversely, argued that XRP is a digital asset, not a security.

In 2023, a federal judge delivered a mixed ruling, finding that XRP sold on public exchanges did not constitute securities transactions, providing a partial victory for Ripple. However, institutional sales of XRP were deemed to have violated securities laws. The lawsuit officially concluded in 2025, with Ripple agreeing to pay a civil penalty, significantly less than what the SEC initially sought. This resolution has brought a degree of regulatory clarity for XRP, particularly regarding its status when traded on public exchanges.

Challenges and Competition

Despite its technological advantages, XRP faces challenges. Concerns about its centralization have been raised due to Ripple Labs' significant holdings of XRP tokens and its role in recommending validator nodes. The cryptocurrency market is also highly competitive, with other projects like Stellar and various stablecoins offering similar payment solutions.

Future Outlook and Ripple USD (RLUSD)

Ripple continues to pursue institutional adoption and expand its offerings. The company's acquisitions in areas like prime brokerage and treasury infrastructure signal a strategy to build a comprehensive financial services platform for institutional use.

Ripple also introduced Ripple USD (RLUSD), a USD-denominated stablecoin issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ripple Labs. RLUSD is backed by an equivalent amount of U.S. dollars and cash equivalents, aiming to provide reliable access to digital dollars for cross-border payments with trust, liquidity, and compliance. RLUSD has rapidly grown in market capitalization, demonstrating Ripple's commitment to expanding its role in the digital asset space.

With increased regulatory clarity, the potential for broader institutional integration, and the strategic introduction of RLUSD, Ripple and XRP are positioned to continue playing a significant role in the evolving landscape of global finance and digital payments.

The XRP Quiet Shift Few Are Watching
Market attention often follows price movements, but some developments unfold away from daily charts. A tweet from crypto enthusiast X Finance Bull draws focus to what is described as a subtle yet meaningful change within the XRP ecosystem. Instead of highlighting short-term trading activity, the commentary centers on infrastructure building, validator participation, and liquidity commitments tied to Evernorth, an institutional digital asset treasury company positioning itself around XRP. The message emphasizes that institutional involvement rarely begins with public excitement. It often starts with foundational steps that indicate long-term intent. In this case, Evernorth is portrayed not as an entity seeking quick returns, but as one aligning its operations with the core mechanics that support sustained network activity. The $XRP Quiet Shift Few Are Watching 🚨👇 Institutional adoption doesn’t start loud. It starts with infra, validators, and real liquidity commitments. Just like Evernorth is doing. They’re not just buying $XRP, they’re building with it: adding yield protocols, running nodes,… https://t.co/noOLD85Gy8 pic.twitter.com/OoGC34qZin — X Finance Bull (@Xfinancebull) December 23, 2025 Building, Not Just Holding According to the post, Evernorth’s approach goes beyond acquiring XRP for balance sheet exposure. The company is presented as actively developing yield strategies, operating nodes, and strengthening order books. These actions suggest a commitment to being part of the operational fabric of the ecosystem rather than remaining a passive holder. X Finance Bull highlights a form of institutional participation focused on durability. Yield protocols, liquidity provisioning, and validator roles are typically associated with entities that expect to remain engaged over extended periods. The implication is that such involvement embeds XRP deeper into institutional workflows, reinforcing its role in treasury management and market infrastructure. By stressing that this is not a fund attempting to benefit from short-term market cycles, the commentary positions Evernorth as signaling intent rather than speculation. The idea advanced is that value is moving quietly, with positioning taking place before broader regulatory or market changes draw wider attention. David Schwartz on Evernorth’s Role The video attached to the post features remarks from Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, who describes Evernorth as a new institutional participant focused specifically on XRP. He explains that the company is backed by major industry names, including SBI, Ripple, Pantera, and Kraken, and that it is raising capital primarily to purchase XRP on the open market as part of a dedicated institutional treasury strategy. We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1 — TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025 Schwartz notes that Evernorth is actively managing its holdings through yield generation and capital market activities, while also planning to participate directly in the network as a validator. He adds that the firm intends to provision liquidity and integrate with decentralized finance protocols, including those connected to RLUSD, reinforcing the view that Evernorth aims to contribute operationally rather than only financially. He further states that the company is expected to explore solutions within the XRP Ledger ecosystem to generate yield, making it a participant seeking practical use cases rather than merely reallocating capital. The post concludes by classifying Evernorth’s activities as part of a broader migration of value happening away from public attention. It suggests that institutions positioning themselves now may be preparing for future shifts in market structure and regulatory clarity. Below we’ll look back at the biggest highlights for XRP and Ripple in 2025. amp;amp;lt;span data-mce-type="bookmark" style="width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0" class="mce_SELRES_start"amp;amp;gt;amp;amp;lt;/spanamp;amp;gt; Ripple, SEC saga comes to an end More than four years after it began, the legal dispute between Ripple Labs Inc. and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) officially came to a close in August. The landmark case, which investigated whether or not sales of XRP violated securities laws, extended back to December 2020. In 2023, a partial ruling favored Ripple Labs, but appeals and counter-appeals extended the saga into 2025. However, with the election of President Donald Trump and a crypto-friendlier regulatory administration, the pair opted to find a jointly negotiated resolution in early 2025. That negotiated resolution was later denied by a U.S. district judge, and then by the courts, so eventually the pair agreed to drop their respective appeals—ending the affair for good and cementing the 2023 ruling in Ripple’s favor as a precedent for future crypto classifications. XRP marks a new all-time high Prior to 2025, XRP had last traded above $3.00 in 2018. Seven years later, and around a month before the conclusion to Ripple Labs’ yearslong legal battle with the SEC, the Ripple-linked XRP made a new all-time high of $3.65, according to data from CoinGecko, surging beyond its previous high mark of $3.40 from 2018. That made XRP the third-largest crypto asset by market capitalization at the time, trailing just Bitcoin and Ethereum. With regulatory scrutiny waning, analysts at the time told Decrypt that investors “believed in Ripple's vision for a regulatory-compliant blockchain for institutions.” Though its rapid rise placed the token in a range it had not seen since 2018, investment firms like Standard Chartered maintained even higher end-of-year price targets for XRP during the summer—expecting a move to $5.50 by the end of year. That mark seems unlikely now though, despite the acceleration of the tokenization trend that Standard Chartered highlighted as a potential catalyst for the price of XRP. XRP, now the fourth-largest asset by market capitalization, was changing hands at $1.90 as of December 15, around 48% off its July all-time high. XRP joins ETF party After the approval and ensuing success of ETFs for crypto majors Bitcoin and Ethereum, both investors and fund issuers were eager to get altcoin ETFs—like those for XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin—to market. As a result, applications for altcoin ETFs flooded the SEC, and by June, expert opinions predicted the likelihood of their approvals as a “near lock” for 2025. Those opinions were further validated in September when the SEC cleared a path to approval for new ETFs by signing off on new generic listing standards. Around that time, Rex Shares and Osprey Funds got their joint XRP ETF to market—an Act 40 ETF that follows different listing standards than other crypto ETFs. Demand for the product was shown immediately, grabbing $38 million in day one volume, good enough to mark the year’s biggest debut up until that point. Shortly thereafter, though, more traditional spot ETF products from Canary Capital, Grayscale, Bitwise, and Franklin Templeton hit the market. In December, leveraged products hit the market as well, allowing investors to double their exposure to XRP’s gains. Since their launch, the spot ETFs have generated nearly $1 billion in net inflows without a single day of outflows, according to data from CoinGlass, as of December 15. RLUSD becomes a billion-dollar stablecoin XRP eclipsed a major milestone in 2025, but so did Ripple Labs’ stablecoin, RLUSD. First launched in December 2024, the dollar-backed stablecoin frontran the growing trend of stablecoin products from other financial giants like Western Union and JP Morgan, and the passing of the GENIUS Act, which provided regulatory clarity on the issuance and trading of the fiat-backed tokens. In the year since its launch, functionality for RLUSD has expanded. In September it was added to Securitize’s tokenization platform, a BlackRock-backed platform that now allows users to exchange shares of tokenized money market funds for RLUSD. In December the firm earned approval to broaden payment services, including RLUSD, in Singapore as well. It's being used for credit card settlements too, thanks to a partnership with Mastercard and WebBank, the issuer of crypto exchange Gemini’s credit card products. While RLUSD is regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services, Ripple applied for a National Bank Charter in July, following the lead of USDC issuer Circle, as it aims to become the “benchmark for trust” in the stablecoin market. And it received conditional approval in December, alongside other stablecoin issuers. At the time of writing, the stablecoin has reached a $1.3 billion market cap, making it the 11th largest stablecoin in less than a year since its launch, according to data from DefiLlama. Ripple’s shopping spree Though closely linked to XRP, Ripple is much larger and more expansive than a single crypto token, and its footprint grew considerably throughout 2025 thanks to major acquisitions. In April, the firm forked over $1.25 billion to acquire primer brokerage Hidden Road as it aimed to better serve institutional clients on a larger scale. It then spent another $1 billion to acquire treasury asset management firm GTreasury in October, in a play that will reduce friction and costs associated with legacy financial systems, according to CEO Brad Garlinghouse. It surrounded that acquisition with two others, paying $200 million to add Toronto-based stablecoin platform Rail, and an undisclosed amount on wallet-as-a-service provider Palisade. All told, Ripple's acquisitions in 2025 maintain a similar theme, improving payment efficiencies while expanding its financial services offerings. Those moves helped the firm notch a $500 million investment in November, valuing it at $40 billion and cementing its place among the current and future leaders of the crypto industry. "This investment isn’t just validation of Ripple’s growth strategy and business built on the foundation of XRP, but also a clear bet on what the future of crypto will look like," Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse wrote on X. "I’m very proud of what we’ve built, and all that’s to come."
